The Slits' live version of John Holt's 'I've got to get away'. Everything a cover should be - taking the song, adding bit'mo' flour, couple'a'eggs and mixing a whole new dubby, delicious cake you're gonna want to lick the bowl after.
I'm also including the original today ,on the off chance you haven't heard it. (and I'm jealous if you haven't)
You slags! Gone are the days of I've got the album-all the b-sides-the t-shirt-and I've seen them 5 times- band loyalism. Fickle bunch of music adulterers is what we all are. So here are the next best things, well for the next 4 days anyway. Cults, a duo from NY making perfectly pleasant, perfectly melodious perfect shooy-dooby-pop, with a pinch of the old Shangri Las spice. Well, take them out for Big Mac at least, won't you!
Last episode of the Series tonight and I'm in mourning for Mad Men. I'd like to gulp down the whole of the next series now, like a bulimic at a bad hour of the night. As numbness set in, Roy Orbison added a Lynchian lingering mood to the closing scenes.
Have you heard the news on the radio? They're gonna end FM/AM transmissions and we will all have to buy a digital radio because of the new Digital Economy Act. This makes me sad because I love my radio as it is. When I was little, both my grandmas in Romania used to have this big hefty radio that took up an entire table and I remember being fascinated by it; at night when we listened to plays we turned the lights off and the lower part of it would shine green and I imagined there were special little radio people inside it who recreated the plays. It really was magic! I love my radio and it's mine and you can't have it Mr Nasty Government, you've done enough to upset me as it is! Tune off.
My computer is dying. It keeps switching off for no reason and it's so sad to see its rapid decline. I'm taking care of it like you would for an old person whose days you know are numbered, like how you'd give them cigarettes to smoke even though the doctor strictly forbid it. I even bought special computer wipeys the other day and gently cleaned it, whispering reassurances to its overheated, asthmatic face. Like many people, I too have formed a loving relationship with my computer. We've had times, let me tell you, like that time I 'jokingly' spilt some tea on it but it didn't get mad at me all and forgave me, only to then pay me back by deleting half of my music, ah, the prankster! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways - One amazing Kraftwerk riff, 3 songs. Hang in there little buddy! It's not your time yet.
The Bird and the Bee have released an album comprised entirely of Hall & Oates covers. Well... I certainly CAN go for that! (sorry). That's not them in the first photo by the way , I discovered it when looking for a picture and came across an amazing Hall & Oates themed party. And I couldn't resist throwing in H & O's actual single cover for 'I can't go for that'- doesn't it make you like 25% more happier just by looking at it? Or is that just 25% more gay? : )
Indie kids have Woodstock, Club kids have the Haçienda, legendary fantasy gigs we wish we'd been around for. It's amazing how nostalgic we get for times we've never even experienced! Fantasies are always much better than the real deal. I imagine a lot of bad clothing and unattractive gurning must have gone on, this was late 80s Manchester afterall. Still, it lives in a Dayglo untouchable fantasy box in the head of anyone who loves to Dance. I've recently bought some excellent compilations off Amazon and thought I'd share some classics with you.May the spirit of the Hacienda be with you when you listen to these, and...Hallelujah!!!
The unique, magnifique and super-formidable Serge Gainsbourg was born today. When he wasn't burning 500 Franc notes on live TV, he was telling a young Whitney he wanted to fuck her. Ah, the french, c'est genial!
